SHIREBROOK DISTRICT NURSING SERVICE
Philosophy of Care
To provide individualized, home based care ensuring dignity,
confidentiality and respect for the individuals wishes at all times.
To assist the individual in creating an environment where they can
live and grow in order to regain full health or attain their full
health potential. To support those caring for others in order that
their role can be seen as a positive contribution from which they can

MIDWIFERY SERVICES
Jane and Hazel work as Community Midwifes and integrate onto Central
Delivery Suite at the Royal Hospital, Chesterfield. Practising both
high and low risk midwifery, keeping updated in all aspects of
Midwifery Care.
Mothers-to-be can choose any hospital of their choice to deliver. They
are offered midwifery led care to low risk mothers, shared care with
Hospital Consultants, and community and home deliveries (subject to
suitability). Midwives provide continuity of care throughout
pregnancy, after the baby is born and during labour if opportunity
allows. The midwives try to give women choices in pregnancy empowering
them to
make their own choice for themselves and their families.

HEALTH VISITOR SERVICES
Health Visitors are all qualified nurses of wide experience often
covering midwifery. Health Visitors are training in child development,
community health, family structure, psychology and health promotion.
They work alongside other agencies including GPs and other health
professionals such as education, social services, voluntary agencies
and welfare rights.
The team in Shirebrook also includes Nursery Nurses who have
specialised skills in play and child development. As part of the
Creswell, Langwith/Whaley Thorns and Shirebrook Sure Start Team we are
able to link into a variety of services aimed at families with
children under 4 years of age to enable parents to give their child a
healthier start in life and be better prepared for school.
Most of the Health Visitors work is with parents, carers of young
children and children with special needs, although they do sometimes
work with older people. A Health Visitor will contact you before or
soon after the birth of a new baby. They offer support and advice in a
varied aspects of child health and development including behaviour
management, minor ailments, nutrition, safety and immunization.
Details on
local support groups, nurseries, parent & toddler groups, toy
libraries and voluntary organizations are also available. Health
Visitors can also prescribe items for a limited number of conditions
relevant to young children. Health Visitors have excellent listening
skills and may provide individual or family support in times of stress
or anxiety. Part of the Health Visitor role is to protect children
from significant harm according to agreed procedures.

NURSERY NURSE SERVICES
The Nursery Nurses work alongside the Health Visitors with the 0
5year olds in general on the Health Visitor case loads. They are
trained in child development. The N.N.E.B. Diploma includes studies in
child psychology, sociology and children with special needs. They are
part of the health team and the Sure Start team which enables them to
link into a variety of services ad work alongside other agencies such
as speech & language therapist, physiotherapist and close links with
the schools.
They run the baby play group for babies aged 0 1 year at the Health
Centre, a two toddler play groups for children aged 1 3 years at the
Model School and Park Road Schools.
Through partnership with Sure Start they offer support and can be
involved at the events held throughout the year in Creswell,
Langwith/Whaley Thorns and Shirebrook such as open days and outings
for the families.

Sue Banning and Anne Brockwell cover the Shirebrook Area.

Child Protection Monitoring
Routine surveillance and nurse health interviews
Assessment, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of health

Representing young people in multi-agency meetings.
Support for healthy schools program
Enuresis management
Behaviour management
Parenting support and emotional support
Interagency communication including referrals to other agencies,
e.g. Child & family therapy, community paediatrician, dietician etc.
Support special needs children in schools.

Speech & Language Therapist- Helen
Gosling
Helen sees children with a range of communication difficulties
including; language difficulties (understanding of spoken language),
sound system difficulties, dysfluency and voice disorders. Children
are either seen in clinic or in school and are seen regularly for
reviews, depending on the severity of their difficulties.
The service operates an open referral system which means that anyone
can refer to them including health visitors, schools, doctors and
parents.
